Objective:
To determine the effectiveness of Renew and Turf Plus fertilizers in hydroseeding applications as compared to triple twelve granular fertilizer.
Materials and Methods:
Renew and Turf Plus were added to slurry mix at 1 gallon per acre of each and applied at time of hydroseeding application on plot1. 12-12-12 granular fertilizer was applied following hydroseeding application on plot 2 at 360 lbs per acre for 1 lb of N-P-K per acre. Applications were done in late October of 2008 and results were observed on April 15th 2009. No additional fertilizer was applied to either plot following initial application.
Results and Discussion:
Initial observations were an increased germination rate and denser stand in the Renew and Turf plus plot. See pictures below. The 12-12-12 stand was thinner with bare dirt still plainly visible.
Roots were observed by using a cup cutter. The Renew and Turf Plus plot had roots growing out the bottom of the plug (approximately 8 inches deep). Upon breaking open the plug numerous roots were observed. See pictures next page. The 12-12-12 plot showed no visible roots at the bottom of the plug. Significantly fewer roots were found upon breaking open the plug.
Conclusion:
The Renew and Turf Plus significantly out perfromed the 12-12-12 fertilizer commonly used in hydroseeding in germination, stand density and root development.
